Fall Launch: What Are Grow Groups and Why Do You Need One?

A Grow Group is exactly what the name suggests: a group of people intentionally growing together. At GraceWay, Sunday Grow Groups create a smaller circle within the larger church family where you can build relationships, ask questions, study God’s Word, and grow alongside others.

Grow Groups do not replace Sunday worship; rather, they complement it by creating space for deeper relationships and discipleship. Sunday worship brings us together as a church family. Grow Groups give us a smaller setting to grow relationships further.

There is a stage in almost every church experience where you know about the church but are not sure you are really part of it yet. You know the lay of the land and you recognize the pastors, but when Sunday ends, you leave without many people knowing you were there. If that describes your experience, the answer probably is not attending a bigger event but making the room smaller.

GraceWay is a multicultural, multigenerational, gospel-centered church family. That means there are people in the building every Sunday with different backgrounds, experiences, cultures, ages, professions, family situations, and stories of God’s faithfulness. That diversity is a gift, but you only experience its full value when you actually get to know the people around you.

Grow Groups create the consistency that helps that happen. Week after week, unfamiliar faces become friends. Someone remembers what you asked them to pray about. You begin learning from other believers who are a few steps ahead of you and encouraging people who may be in a different part of their faith journey. That is how a church begins to feel less like a place you visit and more like a family you belong to.

Church and community are about more than listening to a sermon and heading home. The New Testament calls believers to encourage, pray for, serve, and bear one another’s burdens. Hebrews 10:24–25 reminds us to encourage one another and continue meeting together. We need other people to live that out. That kind of community matters in every season, especially when life gets hard.

Grow Groups create a consistent place for those relationships to form. You cannot schedule friendship, but you can keep showing up where friendship has room to grow.

This is where Grow Groups and church missions connect. When people hear “missions,” they often picture a passport and a missionary serving thousands of miles away. That is part of missions, and GraceWay supports missionaries and provides opportunities to participate in short-term mission trips.

However, the missionary heart of a church starts with followers of Jesus. In Matthew 28, Jesus commands us to go and make disciples. Missions and discipleship are part of the same calling: we grow so that we can go.

“Going” does not always mean going far. GraceWay supports 55 missionaries. However, your mission field can also include your neighborhood, workplace, school, gym, and community. It’s important to remember that the same gospel goes with us whether we are crossing an ocean or crossing the street.

As we learn Scripture and experience Christian community, we become better equipped to share our faith, serve others, and live out what we are learning. Grow Groups help connect knowing and doing, encouraging us to ask:

• How should this truth change the way I live?
• Who needs the hope I have received?
• Where might God be asking me to serve?

That might lead to a mission trip, serving a family in Metro Detroit, sharing the gospel with a coworker, volunteering at GraceWay, or inviting a neighbor to church. No matter where God leads you, Grow Groups help form disciples who are ready to live out His mission.

One of the strengths of GraceWay is that growth is not reserved for one age or stage of life. In fact, GraceWay’s 2026 annual report recorded an average of 425 people participating in Sunday Grow Groups, including 35 preschoolers, 80 elementary-age children, 35 middle and high school students, and 250 adults.

Discipleship does not have an expiration date.

Nobody graduates from following Jesus, and when generations are growing at the same time, something powerful happens within a church. Children see adults taking faith seriously, younger believers gain access to the wisdom of people who have walked with Christ for decades, and older believers have opportunities to invest what God has taught them into the next generation. That is part of what it means to be a multigenerational church family.

At some point, healthy spiritual growth begins turning outward. You start asking a different question beyond simply, “What can I learn?” You start asking, “Where can I help?”

GraceWay believes every person has unique gifts that can help build the body of Christ. There are opportunities to serve at GraceWay with kids, students, guest ministries, worship, outreach, special abilities ministry, and more. 

For someone who is not connected yet, volunteering can feel intimidating. You may not know where you fit or whether you are qualified. Community helps. People who know you can encourage you, notice gifts you might overlook in yourself, and invite you to serve alongside them instead of asking you to take a first step alone.

Grow Groups matter to the broader mission of the church. Healthy churches are not built by a small number of people doing everything; they are built as disciples grow, discover how God has equipped them, and use those gifts for the good of others and the advancement of the gospel.

The longtime attender benefits from a Grow Group just as much as the newcomer. Even if you have your Sunday routine down perfectly, know the building like the back of your hand, and recognize plenty of people, it’s easy for your involvement to become mostly passive. Treat fall as a reset.

Following Jesus is about continuing to grow as His disciple, not just accumulating years of church attendance. There is always another step to take, another part of Scripture to understand, and another area of life to surrender. A Grow Group gives you an intentional, regular place to keep taking those steps instead of assuming spiritual growth happens automatically with time.

Fall has a way of resetting everything. That makes September one of the best times to decide what deserves a permanent place in your routine.

Life is remarkably talented at filling every opening you give it. If you wait for life to calm down before making space for Christian community, you may be waiting a while. Instead, decide first. Sunday worship, growing as a disciple, and finding Christian community all matter. Build your schedule around those priorities.
